COURSE TITLE:  Advanced Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment of TMJ Disorders (8.0 Contact Hours).  DATE:  September 26, 2010.  TIME:   8:00 am - 5:00 pm.  FACULTY:  Jeff Giulietti, MPT, ATC, OCS, CSCS, COMT, FAAOMPT.  PREREQUISITE:  None.  AUDIENCE:  Licensed physical therapists and dentists.  REGISTRATION FEE:  $225.  REGISTRATION DEADLINE:  September 10, 2010.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course will provide participants with a comprehensive approach to treating temporomandibular joint dysfunctions (TMD) conservatively and postoperatively.  An integrative approach including extensive examination of the upper quarter (ie, cervical spine, mandible, upper thoracic spine, scapulothoracic articulation), posture and ergonomic considerations, identifying key abnormal movement and relaxation deficits, orthopedic manual therapy, proprioception and motor control exercises will be reviewed.  This course will also include a review of case studies, observation and discussion of patient video, and laboratory participation.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Become familiar with physical and psychosocial causes of TMD and its variabilities.
  • Be able to complete an objective exam of the patient with oral-facial pain.
  • Be able to make use of critical thinking analysis to form a treatment plan based on a problem list.
  • Introduce the concept of applying orthopedic manual therapy techniques to treat TMD.
  • Be able to identify and treat proprioception deficit of TMD.
  • Become familiar with dental terminology with regards to TMD.

COURSE TITLE:  Evidence Based Diagnosis and Treatment of Pelvic Floor Dysfunctions (8.0 Contact Hours).  DATE:  November 14, 2010.  TIME:  8:00 am - 5:00 pm.  FACULTY:  Daniel Kirages, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT.  PREREQUISITE:  None.  AUDIENCE:  Licensed physical therapists.  REGISTRATION FEE:  $225.  REGISTRATION DEADLINE:  November 1, 2010.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This one-day course has been designed for participants looking for first exposure to treating patients/clients with pelvic floor muscle dysfunction resulting in urinary incontinence.  With one out of four women and one out of ten men suffering from involuntary bladder control loss, it is imperative that all physical therapists have at least a cursory background about proper examination, evaluation, and intervention for this condition.  This course will help build the clinical knowledge necessary to achieve positive outcomes for improved bladder control in both men and women.  The varied lecture/lab format will allow the participants to learn how to collect the apropriate subjective and objective data in a friendly and comfortable manner.  Lab will consist of subjective interview practice, pelvic floor muscle awareness training with biofeedback demonstration, therapeutic exercise and patient case role playing.  There will be no internal examinations during lab.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the anatomical and physiological mechanisms responsible for urinary incontinence.
  • Interview a patient/client for important subjective data in order to plan an appropriate objective exam.
  • Perform a comfortable objective exam in order to identify an appropriate intervention strategy.
  • Instruct a patient/client in a progressive, functional pelvic floor muscle exercise program.
  • Instruct a patient/client with an appropriate behavioral modifications to restore bladder control.
  • Identify outcome measures for patient/client return visits to determine effectiveness.
